Ghana signs new cocoa sustainability deal with Japan's Meiji Holdings

The Government of Ghana has entered into a new cooperation agreement with Japanese confectionery company Meiji Holdings Company Limited to support the sustainable development of the country’s cocoa industry and promote a circular economy. The Letter of Intent was signed in Accra on Monday, September 14, 2026, during an event marking the 100th anniversary of Meiji Milk Chocolate and celebrating the company’s long-standing partnership with Ghana. Africa's 10 weakest passports and where Ghana stands Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, signed the agreement on behalf of the Ghanaian government. The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, signed on behalf of Japan, while the Chief Executive Officer of Meiji Holdings Company Limited initialled the document for the company. The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between Ghana and Meiji in areas related to sustainable cocoa production and the development of circular economy initiatives. The event also featured a gesture from Meiji to mark its long-standing relationship with Ghana. The company presented the government with 10,000 cacao bioplastic ballpoint pens as part of activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of its milk chocolate. Speaking at the ceremony, Ofosu-Adjare congratulated Meiji on reaching the milestone and wished the company continued growth and success. Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Julius Debrah, urged the relevant institutions to work closely together to ensure that the partnership produces tangible results.
