When the Bank of Ghana makes a move, the effects can go far beyond the banking sector. They can eventually affect you. But what exactly is the central bank responsible for?
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has explained its role and why it is different from the commercial banks Ghanaians use every day.
In a video released by the Bank of Ghana, the central bank explained its role in Ghana’s economy and clarified that it does not operate like commercial banks such as GCB Bank, Ecobank or Fidelity Bank.
Unlike commercial banks, the Bank of Ghana does not open accounts for the general public or provide personal loans to individuals.

The central bank said its main responsibility is to manage and protect the country’s financial system and support economic stability.
According to the BoG, it has three main objectives under the law.
Price stability
The first is price stability.
This means working to keep inflation low and stable so that the prices of goods and services do not rise sharply and put pressure on households and businesses.
Financial stability
The second is financial stability.
The Bank of Ghana supervises banks and other financial institutions, sets rules and standards, and takes steps to reduce risks that could threaten the financial system.
Supporting economic growth and development
The third is to support economic growth and development.
A stable economy and sound financial system create an environment where businesses can invest, expand and access credit.
To achieve these objectives, the Bank of Ghana performs several important functions.
These include setting monetary policy, supervising banks and other financial institutions, managing the country’s currency and overseeing payment systems.
The central bank also plays a key role in maintaining confidence in the Ghana cedi and ensuring that the financial system remains strong enough to withstand economic shocks.
