‘My dad almost died’ – Ohemaa Mercy opens up on family struggles

Ghanaian gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has opened up about some of the difficult moments she has experienced, including her father's near-death experience and the loss of two of her brothers. According to the gospel singer, one of the most challenging periods for her occurred in February 2026 when her father was hospitalized with a heart-related condition. Speaking in an interview on TV3 on August 24, 2026, Ohemaa Mercy said she had to stay by her father's side during the difficult period as his condition became critical. “My biggest challenge was somewhere in February when my dad was hospitalized. I had to be with him; he almost died,” she stated. Despite the frightening experience, she disclosed that she considers her father's recovery a testimony of God's intervention. Ohemaa Mercy explained that she believes personal testimonies are important to a Christian's faith, particularly when others are sharing their experiences. “Sometimes if you’re in the Lord and you can’t actually have that testimony with you whilst other people are sharing theirs, what evidence do you have?” she asked. She noted that she believes God demonstrated His power in her own family by healing her father. “God started with me in my home, healing my father from a problem of the heart and he is still alive. It’s a real testimony I’m going to share on the altar of the healer,” she shared. 'McBrown has a calling, she must answer it' - Ohemaa Mercy reveals The gospel musician further reflected on how difficult circumstances can sometimes precede what she considers God's restoration. “Sometimes God allows certain things to go and as it’s going, He is about to refill in,” she said. She also shared her perspective on the painful experiences that people encounter in life, saying she believes such moments can reveal God's love and purpose. “Sometimes, He allows things that will be a problem for us and that’s how God shows us how He loves us,” she noted. Ohemaa Mercy also spoke about the loss of two of her brothers, describing the experience as one of the most difficult periods of her life. She recalled questioning God about why her brothers had to die at a time when she needed them the most. “I’ve lost two of my brothers and it was really tough for me. I had to ask God why they would leave at that point in time because I needed them so much,” she stated. However, she mentioned that with time, she came to understand the losses differently and believes their passing may have spared the family from other difficulties. “Later, I got to understand that if they were alive, they might even be a burden, so God cleared it off,” she added.
