A delegation from Parliament, led by Clerk Ebenezer Djietror, presented the 2026 Democracy Cup to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, on August 25, 2026.
The trophy tour, which took place at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, saw high-ranking members of the service and other officials from Parliament converge to mark the occasion.
Addressing the media, IGP Christian Yohuno indicated that the game symbolises democratic principles and the need for citizens to uphold them in high esteem.

He said the Ghana Police Service is committed to providing the necessary security support to ensure the game comes off successfully in Kumasi.
“To get our involvement in a match which is coming on August 28 in Kumasi. The main match is between Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak. This is the third edition of inaugurating this democracy. It means that the Speaker decided to remind us about the benefits of democracy, which we have been in need of all these years. Thirty years of democracy is not a joke.
"We decided to be like this as we are informed. Considering other options, democracy is the best, and that is what Ghana will stand for. We in the security services have also given support to Ghanaians to make sure that we uphold this democracy strongly for Mother Ghana, for this generation and the generations yet to come. So, we are ready to receive the cup,” he said.
Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror, shed light on the reason football is being used as a medium to promote democracy in the country.
“The Speaker subscribed to that, and having lived that experience through 30 years of his journey, he conceived this idea of leveraging football to promote the values of democracy because football brings us together, friends, enemies, and everyone. Football binds us together.
“The principle of unity resonates well in football. The principles of dedication, commitment, sacrifice and tenacity also resonate well in football. Healthy competition resonates well in football. So, football appears to be a good vehicle through which the concept of democracy can be propagated, promoted and sustained. With this unity of purpose, the Speaker launched the Democracy Cup three years ago,” he stated.
The much-anticipated clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak will take place at the Baba Yara Stadium on August 28, 2026, in Kumasi.
