Acclaimed Ghanaian gospel singer Diana Hopeson has opened up about the marital trauma she experienced and how she managed to navigate the difficult period.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on August 25, 2026, the renowned singer, while recounting the challenges she faced in her marriage, advised couples in life-threatening situations to seek help and leave if necessary.
“I will not advise anybody unless it is a matter of death; flee. If there is a death matter threatening your life, please ask for help and flee. But if there is no death matter, use the energy to find a solution to it, then try to let go of it because it will follow you, especially when there is a child involved. This is always a constant reminder,” she said.
Diana Hopeson, however, explained that although she would recommend divorce when a relationship has reached a point beyond reconciliation, it should not be the first option when a marriage can still be salvaged.

She further noted that some couples opt for divorce even when their marriages could still be worked on, urging such couples to explore alternatives to save their relationships, as divorce can also be emotionally painful.
“I tell people the energy you need to separate, you need half of that to keep the relationship working. Separation energy is wilder. The separation energy is too much. So use the energy to make sure it works. Mine was a disease. We didn't even know what kind of disease it was. So it was inevitable, and my life was in danger,” she stated.
Further explaining why her marriage eventually could not be saved, Diana Hopeson said her ex-husband, who had been a major support in her career, changed his mindset after she asked him to focus on being her husband rather than continuing as her manager.
According to Diana Hopeson, her husband was influenced by people who believed she would eventually abandon him because her career was flourishing.
“You are my husband. Be my husband. I don't want you to manage me anymore. So it was like I was ungrateful. Who knew me if he had not brought me up? He was my husband from the very start. But I was singing before we met, and he would not preach without me singing. So we were a family ministry. A good, beautiful team.
“He would do all the arrangements, arrange the interviews, everything. And I am the timekeeper. I would make sure that once he gave me the schedule, I would prepare for it. You know, a beautiful team... Now that the money has come, she wants to leave you. So people believed him,” she stated.
The renowned singer also revealed that what ultimately broke the relationship was her husband’s decision to take their marital issues to the media.
She explained that although she had not made up her mind to pursue a divorce, her husband’s actions eventually forced her to initiate the process.

“People who didn't know that there was this situation believed him. He's believable, and he can tell his stories. The fact that he even went to the press and asked them to publicise it, saying that I had left him, was my biggest pain.
“He went to the media, and that was the knife that cut my heart. I was so hurt. I was so hurt. I was so hurt. Then, when he came, he had found someone, so he didn't have money for the divorce. I should do it, and then he started harassing me.
“So now I had to mourn the person who is alive. I had to mourn him, let go of him, and leave as a single parent,” she added.
