Over 91,000 people hit by deadly June 29 floods - Interior Minister

Minister of the Interior, Mohammed‑Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that the June 29 floods affected 91,989 people across seven regions of Ghana. He provided the update during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 24, 2026. Muntaka explained that 18,398 households in 77 districts were hit by the disaster, which resulted in 39 deaths and left one person still missing. The missing person, he noted, is a four‑month‑old baby from the Ga East Municipality. "And then we all recollect the sad incident that hit us on the 29th of June, where 77 districts were affected in seven regions nationwide with their flood. A total of 91,989 persons from 18,398 households were victims of the disaster. One person remains missing, a four‑month‑old baby in Ga East and 39 deaths," he disclosed. "And you can see the table that we provided. The regions Volta Region, the number of diseases that were affected was seven. The total number of affected persons was 9,466. The total number of deaths was four. Greater Accra, the number of districts that were affected was 27. The number of persons that were affected was 56,022. "...And the number of deaths that we had was 17. Central Region, 16 districts were affected. 21,882 persons were affected, and the number of deaths in Central Region was 18. "Western Region, Western North, we had six districts that were affected. 937 persons were affected; no death was recorded in the case of Western North. Western Region proper, two districts were affected, and the number of persons that were affected was 2,031," he stated. "In the Eastern Region, only one district was affected, and the number of persons that were affected was 190. In the Ashanti Region, we had 16 districts that were affected. 1,461 were affected without death. So when you put the total, you have 91,986," Muntaka added. The June 29 floods, triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall, caused widespread disruption, displacement and loss of life across the affected communities. Watch his remarks below.
