Dear GhanaWeb: I swapped my lunch with a friend who later confessed he wanted me dead

Dear GhanaWeb,
Friday started like every other workday, and I never imagined it would change the way I see friendship forever.
During our lunch break, one of my closest friends told me he wanted to buy me jollof rice. We've known each other since school, have the same qualifications, and although I usually get more contracts and sometimes bring him in to work with me, I never thought there was any bad blood between us.
I called my wife while waiting for the food, as we usually tell each other almost everything. When I told her my friend was buying me lunch, she became uneasy. She reminded me to be careful because not everyone is happy for my success. Then she jokingly said, "When he brings the food, exchange your plate with his."
I laughed because it sounded ridiculous, but for some reason, when the food arrived, I actually swapped the meals.
Nothing happened for the rest of the day, and I completely forgot about it.
Around 1 a.m. on Saturday, I received a phone call that my friend had been rushed to the hospital after suddenly complaining of severe stomach pains. My wife and I rushed there immediately.
By the time we arrived, the doctors were doing everything they could to save him. I held his hand, and with what little strength he had left, he looked at me and said he was sorry. He admitted that he had planned to poison me, but because we exchanged the food, he ended up eating the poisoned meal himself.
Moments after making that confession, he died.
Since then, I haven't been able to process what happened. The person I trusted like a brother allegedly wanted me dead. I keep asking myself what I did to deserve such hatred. My wife believes God saved my life that day, and I believe that too.
I'm grateful to be alive, but my heart is heavy. If someone I trusted that much could allegedly plan something like this, how do I ever trust anyone again?
If you were in my shoes, would you ever be able to trust people again after such an experience? How do I heal from this?
