Dear GhanaWeb: My husband was poisoned to death by his friends

Dear GhanaWeb,

I have carried this pain for years and even as I type this, it still feels unreal. My husband died in a way that continues to haunt me because I strongly believe his death could have been prevented.

We had just moved into our new house, a house he worked so hard to build. Not long after that, he also bought a new car. As his wife, I was happy for our progress, but I began noticing changes in the way some of his friends behaved around him.

Some of them would make strange comments disguised as jokes. Others would ask too many questions about his finances and how he managed to achieve certain things.

I spoke to him about it several times. I told him I didn’t trust the energy around some of those friends. I felt jealousy and resentment was hiding behind their smiles.

My husband, being the kind-hearted person he was, dismissed my concerns. He kept telling me that they were his longtime friends and that I was overthinking things.

One weekend, they invited him to a party. I wasn’t comfortable with him going, but he insisted it was just a gathering among friends. That night changed my life forever.

A few hours after he left home, I received a call that he had suddenly become very ill at the party. By the time I got there, he was in terrible condition.

He was rushed to the hospital, and I remember praying and hoping that whatever was wrong could be treated. Unfortunately, his condition worsened and he passed away shortly afterward.

At first, everyone acted shocked. His friends claimed they had no idea what had happened. They all said he was fine when they arrived at the party and that they couldn’t explain why he suddenly became sick.

Because of the circumstances, an autopsy was conducted. When the results came back, my world completely collapsed. The report confirmed that my husband had been poisoned.

Since that day, not one of those friends has provided any useful information. Nobody seems to know anything. It is as if everyone suddenly became blind and mute the moment my husband died.

The police opened an investigation and have been looking into the matter, but years later I still do not have the answers I desperately need. The people who were with him during his final hours continue to claim ignorance, and that is what hurts me the most.

Sometimes I sit alone and replay all those moments in my head. I remember every warning I gave him, every uneasy feeling I had, the way some of those friends looked at him after we moved into our new home and after he bought that car.

Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am not. But what I know for certain is that my husband left home healthy, attended a party with his friends, and never returned alive. An autopsy confirmed he was poisoned, yet to this day no one has been held accountable.

How does a person find peace when the people who may hold the answers continue to keep silent?

Sometimes I feel like justice may never come, and that thought is one of the hardest things I have ever had to live with. How do I heal from this?
