Dear GhanaWeb: My husband wants me to quit my 11-year career

Dear GhanaWeb, I never imagined that after marriage, the biggest argument in my home would be about my job. I have worked at the same company for 11 years. I love what I do, I am respected there, and my take-home salary is GH₵5,370. With maternity leave just a few months away, resigning now would be one of the worst financial decisions I could make. My husband earns GH₵4,800, and together we manage our home. Despite being heavily pregnant, I still wake up every day, go to work, return home, and handle all the household chores without complaining or asking him to help. I do this for peace. The problem is that he wants me to resign and become a full-time housewife. His reason has nothing to do with my pregnancy or workload. He says an ex of mine works just two blocks away from my office. Ironically, I didn’t even know my ex worked there until my husband told me. Since then, I have only seen him once. We have never spoken, I don’t have his number, and I have absolutely no interest in him. That relationship ended long ago. He hurt me, he wasn’t my type, and I moved on. My husband is the man I chose to build my life with. Yet no matter how many times I explain this, my husband insists I quit my job because of someone who is no longer part of my life. What hurts most is that resigning would put a huge financial strain on us. I would lose my income, my benefits, and my upcoming maternity leave — all because of a fear that has no basis in reality. Sometimes I wonder if this is really about my ex, or if the fact that I earn a little more than my husband makes him uncomfortable. I love my husband, but I also love the career I have spent 11 years building. I don’t believe I should have to sacrifice it because of someone from my past who means nothing to me. Am I being unreasonable for refusing to quit my job, or is my husband’s jealousy getting in the way of our marriage? What do I do now?
