Dear GhanaWeb: My husband’s silence is killing me

Dear GhanaWeb, I have been married for just two years, and we already have a baby who is not yet a year old. I have genuinely tried to be a good wife and create a peaceful home. I cook, clean, care for our child, and do everything I can to make life easier for my husband. But for the past eight months, my marriage has felt like a prison of silence. My husband barely speaks to me. When I talk to him, he ignores me. The only time he says anything is when he needs something—and even that is rare. We live under the same roof, yet it feels as though we are complete strangers. In all these months, I haven’t seen him smile at me. We haven’t shared a meaningful conversation, any intimacy, or the simple joys couples normally experience. I keep trying to impress him, hoping he will notice my efforts, but instead he seems more interested in leaving the house than spending time with me. Whenever I gather the courage to ask what I’ve done wrong, he simply replies, “How am I behaving?”, and the conversation ends there. I have cried, begged, and even woken up before dawn to plead with him to tell me what went wrong. Sometimes, while tears stream down my face, he tells me I am misbehaving and that if I want to cry, I should go to my parents’ house. Then he turns away and goes back to sleep. The pain is unbearable. What confuses me most is that he is perfectly normal with everyone else. When visitors come, he is cheerful, friendly, and full of life. But the moment they leave, the silence returns. It is as if I am invisible. The only person he shows genuine affection to is our baby; he plays, smiles, and bonds with the child, but with me, there is nothing. Did I offend him without realizing it? Did I hurt him somehow? Is there something I should apologize for? Why won’t he tell me? I am emotionally exhausted. I feel lonely even though I am married, and the hardest part is knowing that our innocent child is growing up in the middle of this pain. If you were in my shoes, would you keep fighting for answers, or would you accept that someone who refuses to communicate may no longer want the marriage? What do I do now?
