pic 25732508 President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations in 2027 will run for several days, with a number of world leaders expected to attend.

He said preparations were underway for the historic occasion, which will mark 70 years since Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.

Speaking during a recent press briefing, President Mahama said Ghana’s position as the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence had generated interest among world leaders who wish to join the celebrations.

“The 70th anniversary is a very important event, and we’ve started planning towards it. Many world leaders have expressed a wish to come because of Ghana’s prominence as the first to break away from colonialism. So, we expect a lot of heads of state to join us for the celebration,” he said.

The President noted that the anniversary planning committee was yet to submit its report on the proposed format of the event but indicated that the celebrations would not be limited to March 6.

“It’s not just going to be a day’s event. I’m sure it will be a celebration over a period, with many activities leading up to the event and even after it,” he added.

The programme is expected to include cultural activities and exhibitions highlighting Ghana’s journey since independence, including the country’s achievements and challenges.

“We’ve had our setbacks, but we’ve also had successes, and so we need to showcase all that,” President Mahama said.

Beyond the celebrations, the government is also planning urban renewal works to improve the appearance of Accra and other regional capitals ahead of the anniversary.

In Accra, the planned works include road repairs and re-marking, fixing damaged pavements and landscaping to give the capital a facelift.

Similar improvements are expected in regional capitals, including the rehabilitation of selected roads.

Ghana will mark its 70th Independence Anniversary on March 6, 2027, commemorating the country's attainment of independence in 1957 under the leadership of its first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
