Home - Why Black Stars coach Kim Lars hasn't been paid for 13 months – GFA explains
The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has disclosed that interim Black Stars coach Kim Lars Björkegren has not been paid for 13 months due to insufficient funds.
He said other national team coaches were also owed months of salary arrears but continued to serve the country to the best of their abilities despite the situation.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on November 4, 2026, Okraku called for greater investment in sports to help generate revenue to pay coaches.

“The coach of the Black Queens, who is today the acting coach of the Black Stars, has not been paid for 13 months. The coach of our Olympic team has not been paid for 12 months. And the list can go on and on and on and on and on. That’s why, when I spoke about a sports fund, I said it was a good thing, but we need more dedicated revenue streams coming into the sports fund because football is heavily capital-intensive.
“And you’re thinking about the coach of the U17, the coach of the U15, the coach of the U20, the coach of the U23, and the coach of the A national team, both boys and girls. Then you talk about beach soccer, and then you talk about futsal. And here, we’re not only talking about the head coach,” he said.
The disclosure comes as the GFA faces criticism over the poor performances of various national teams, prompting public calls for Okraku to resign.
