The Apinto Divisional Council has declared that it will no longer accept Gold Fields Ghana Limited as the operator of the Tarkwa Mine, intensifying calls for the mining concession to be handed over to a Ghanaian-owned company.
The Divisional Chief and Apinto Tufohene, Nana Adu Panii Mbease, announced the decision in a video posted on X and sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

He noted that a formal statement had already been submitted to the government to communicate the council’s position.
“We will not take Gold Fields again,” he declared while addressing members of the council.
He further explained that the decision had been formally communicated to the authorities, adding; “We have done a press release and submitted it to the government that we won’t take Gold Fields again.”
The council’s position follows growing concerns among traditional leaders about the benefits mining activities have brought to communities around the Tarkwa Mine.
The chiefs have previously complained about poor roads, inadequate social infrastructure, unemployment and the degradation of more than 4,000 hectares of Apinto lands, which they say have affected livelihoods and access to farmlands.
The Apinto Divisional Council has consequently urged the government not to renew Gold Fields’ mining leases, which are due to expire in April 2027.
Nana Adu Panii Mbease’s announcement adds to the ongoing debate over the future of the Tarkwa Mine, with Gold Fields maintaining that it has made significant contributions through taxes, royalties, local procurement and community development projects.
The company has also said it remains committed to engaging traditional authorities and the government as discussions on the lease renewal continue.
