Home - AMA cannot remove traders it depends on for revenue – True Drivers Union
The Public Relations Officer of the True Drivers Union, Yaw Berimah, has questioned how the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) intends to remove traders from unauthorised locations when its revenue collectors continue to issue them tickets and collect money.
He argued that the Assembly's continued collection of revenue from traders operating at bus stops and on pavements undermines its efforts to clear the spaces, as the traders have little incentive to leave while they continue to be recognised as sources of revenue.
“How can the Assembly remove traders from these places when it depends on the money it collects from them? As long as its officials continue to ticket them, the traders will remain there,” he said.
In a report by adomonline.com on November 5, 2026, Berimah accused the AMA of relying on revenue generated from traders occupying unauthorised spaces to boost its Internally Generated Funds (IGF), raising questions about its commitment to enforcing its own regulations.

He maintained that the Assembly must first stop collecting money from such traders if it is genuinely committed to evacuating them and restoring order at bus stops and pavements.
Berimah further explained that the situation creates difficulties for commercial drivers, who are often forced to stop in the middle of the road because traders have occupied designated loading and offloading points.
He said drivers who resort to stopping on the road to pick up or drop off passengers subsequently face arrest by the police, leaving them caught between the activities of traders and traffic enforcement authorities.
His comments come amid growing tensions between transport operators and authorities following the introduction of the police's automated traffic enforcement system, TraffiTech-GH, on November 1, 2026.
