Home - Financial support during relationship does not guarantee property share – Lawyer

pic 38705316 Lawyer and lecturer Oxford Osei Bonsu has advised people against starting businesses or providing financial support to their romantic partners without first defining the relationship and agreeing on their expectations.

Speaking on Neat FM, he cautioned that financial contributions made during a relationship do not automatically entitle a person to a share of their partner’s property if the relationship ends.

“Don’t start a business or support your boyfriend or girlfriend without defining your relationship,” he warned.

Responding to a question about whether a man is obliged to share properties acquired during a relationship with his girlfriend after a breakup, Osei Bonsu answered in the negative.

He explained that couples should enter relationships with clear intentions and a shared understanding of their future, particularly if they intend to build assets together.

According to him, when both partners understand the direction of their relationship, they can jointly establish businesses, acquire assets and enjoy the benefits together.

However, he stressed that being romantically involved with someone does not automatically create an obligation for that person to share assets acquired during the relationship.
