Home - Teacher Unions Strike: 'Advise government to do the needful' - GNAT

pic 16896704 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has urged government to take the necessary steps to resolve the issues behind the ongoing teacher strike.

GNAT Head of Salaries, Isaac Nii Baah, said teachers are ready to resume work, but the concerns that triggered the industrial action must first be addressed.

According to a report by adomonline.com on September 28, 2026, he urged anyone seeking to offer advice on the impasse to direct it towards finding a solution that will allow teachers to return to work.

“So, if anyone has any advice, they should give it to government to do the needful,” he said.

Baah said the strike is affecting both teachers and pupils, with children being kept at home while the dispute remains unresolved.

“Our children are also at home, and we’re worried,” he stated.

He stressed that education must be prioritised if Ghana is to achieve meaningful development, noting that teachers remain central to the success of the sector.

“Ghana is for all of us, and any nation that wants to develop doesn’t downplay education; you prioritise it and it is teachers who will make it work,” he noted.

The three teacher unions—GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (PRETAG)—declared a nationwide industrial action effective Friday, September 25, 2026.

The unions cited prolonged delays in addressing critical concerns affecting teachers, particularly issues involving the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) in relation to their conditions of service.
