Lawyers for former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, E. Bruce-Cathline and Partners, have revealed that their client is no longer in the detention facility of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a press release dated April 8, the lawyers wrote, "On April 7th 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to judicial order. He is home with his family."

"Mr. Ofori-Atta remains fully committed to use due process in defense of his rights as guaranteed under the constitution and laws of the United States," they added.

"He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period," they stated.

Mr Ofori-Atta had been in ICE custody since early January after his arrest in the United States over issues relating to his immigration status.

He was picked up by ICE officials in January, 2026, in the Virginia area, with his legal team later confirming the detention was linked to the legality of his stay in the country.

Following his arrest, he was held at an ICE detention facility in Virginia, where he remained for several weeks as legal processes, including immigration proceedings and an extradition request from Ghana, unfolded.

During his detention, he was denied bail by a U.S. court while contesting the case and seeking to resolve his immigration status.

Mr Ofori-Atta’s detention drew public and political attention, given his role as a former finance minister.

The latest development now raises fresh questions about the next phase of the legal and immigration processes, including whether he will remain in the United States or face possible extradition.

As of now, there has been no official statement from U.S. authorities or his legal team detailing the conditions surrounding his release
