The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) says this year’s “December in GH” will no longer be centred solely in Accra, marking a major shift toward a fully national celebration. Deputy CEO Abeiku Santana disclosed that the 2024 edition has been redesigned to ensure every region feels the economic and cultural impact of the annual festive programme.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Santana noted that Ghana has increasingly become “the converging point for Christmas celebration,” a reputation government intends to strengthen by widening participation across the country. He revealed that activities for this year’s edition are already underway, remarking that “December started in November,” with events rolling out in Greater Accra, Sekondi, Cape Coast and other regional hubs.

The expanded festival now runs on seven thematic pillars—gastronomy, literature, fashion, culture, music and film—aimed at showcasing Ghana’s creative and cultural diversity. One of the new highlights, Santana said, is Taste 68, an initiative celebrating 68 traditional dishes prepared by local caterers. He pointed out the ingenuity behind the programme, citing how everyday staples like yam, cassava and plantain are being transformed into inventive culinary creations, including a layered cake made from “eto.”

He also announced enhanced collaborations with the creative arts sector, including an African Film Festival expected to feature over 21 participating countries.

Describing the refreshed edition as “a black star experience,” Santana said the GTA is intent on elevating Ghana’s cultural presence on the global festive map while ensuring the benefits of the season are shared more evenly across the nation.
