Mess Tennis humbles Anglogold

The 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club are proud champions of the Founder’s Day Tennis Tournament after beating Anglogold Ashanti Tennis Club in Kumasi on Monday.

The two clubs, parading crack tennis stars, defied a downpour to play three men’s doubles, of which the hosts Mess Tennis Club won two, as the visitors managed one win.

The pair of Elorm Kpe and Jonanthan Quartey beat E. Ofori and Joe Lashie 6-1 and S.S. Abebe and Alex Yeboah-Asuamah also pipped Yaw Hakeem and Reagan 6-3, to give the Mess Tennis their two vital wins.

The visitors’ single win came when Ben Adams and Adu-Boakye inflicted a 6-1 defeat on Uncle Sammy and Dr. Kojo Ansah of the Mess Tennis Club who enjoyed massive support.

The other games billed for the day, including women’s doubles, were rained off to the chagrin of the huge tennis fans that had stormed the Mess Tennis Club in Kumasi.

President of the host club, Mr. Samuel Ampadu-Kyei aka ‘Kyikyis,’ expressed his club’s appreciation to the visiting team for honouring their invitation to make the one-day tournament possible.

He expressed the hope that the two leading tennis clubs would work to institutionalize the bond of friendship between them to help promote the sport in the country.

On his part, captain of the Anglogold Ashanti Tennis Club, Mr. Adu-Boakye thanked the host team for the reception, promising to host Mess Tennis for a return encounter soon.

Brig. Gen George Adjei, aid de camp to former President Kufuor, was among the scores of prominent people that watched the exciting tennis games which produced fireworks.

The 4 Garrison Mess Tennis Club team was captained by Kofi Otoo and he was seen smiling after the important victory over the ‘stubborn’ Anglogold Tennis Club.
