Majeed Waris could have been Celtic's record signing, now struggling in Ligue 2

Celtic were linked with Lorient striker Abdul Majeed Waris in the summer, who might have set them back £12m.

Celtic would have had to break the bank to bring Lorient striker Abdul Majeed Waris to Parkhead in the summer transfer window.

The Mail reported that the Ghanaian striker, who was on the radar of Celtic and a host of Premier League clubs, was valued at £12 million.

This, for the record, is double the fee The Hoops paid to sign John Hartson from Coventry City in 2001 – currently the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Based on current form, however, Waris might have been more Amido Balde than Moussa Dembele.

Lorient were relegated to France’s second tier last season, their 11 year stay in Ligue 1 brought to an end as they lost to Troyes in the relegation play-off.

Record-breaking distaster?

And if Lorient were hoping that Waris would score the goals to fire them back to the top flight, they will have been left disappointed as they languish sixth in the table, some way off the pace.

Injuries might have restricted Waris’ influence this season but a tally of one goal in seven appearances in all competitions is not exactly befitting of a £12 million-rated centre-forward.

The 21-year-old did have a decent scoring record in Ligue 1, netting 19 times in 51 games for the Brittany based club since moving from Trabzonspor in the summer of 2015.

But on current form, it is difficult to see how he could have kept pace with Moussa Dembele or Leigh Griffiths – let alone justified a club-record price tag.
