Indonesian giants Persib Bandung are concerned with the fitness of Ghanaian international Michael Essien ahead of the start of the upcoming league season next week.

Essien sat out as Persib lost 0-1 to PSMS Medana in the 2018 Presidential Cup on Friday due to a swell on his right knee.

The Former Chelsea player is definitely ruled out for the opening game of the league season as he is set to continue his spell on the sidelines.

Persib team doctor Bandung, Rafi Ghani said no timeline has been set for the midfielders return, stressing it will all depend on how he responds to treatment in the coming weeks.

"The day before the PSMS match, Essien felt pain in the knee and sudden swelling, now being treated and examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI ), we are just looking forward to the healing process," he said.

"There are several stages of the therapeutic process that I want to run, so hopefully it will get better soon, but otherwise there will be more process to go through," he concluded.
