8 teams to vie for Western Regional Invitational Soccer Tournament

The edition of the Western Region pre-season Invitational Soccer Tournament was successfully launched in Takoradi on Monday 26th August 2019.

In a special address, Wilson Arthur, Chairman of the Sports Committee said his Committee and the Eleven Member Local Organizing Committee for the soccer tournament have an opportunity to become architects of the new Western Region football brand.

He therefore challenged members of the two committees to package a memorable, compelling and experientially acknowledged tournament for soccer fans, players, officials, advertisers and sponsors.

The tournament, he said will manifest the vision of the Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah.

In his speech, the Minister praised the various committees for the competence displayed in putting together the maiden edition of the annual tournament.

He said he will continue to count on his regional sports committee who are committed to his vision to offer an ultimate support and cooperation capable of pushing him to revive soccer economy in the Western Region.

He subsequently announced that renovation works on Essipon Stadium, as part of reviving sporting activities will start this year,

According to Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, assurances coming from the executive, suggests, sooner than later, the stadium will be receiving serious rehabilitation works to position it amidst growing activities that will inspire the growth of sports activities in the region.

The 8 club tournament introduced, will be played between 14th September to 16th September at Essipon Stadium, Samartex Park and Tarkwa T&A Park.

Nana Osheawura Banwa IV - Chief of Dompim Pepesa was the Chairman for the occasion who eulogized the Regional Minister for coming out boldly to improve local economy while using sports.

He threw traditional leadership support into the equation and offered to be part of this laudable project.

The eight participating teams selected by the Regional Football Administration, have meanwhile been offered five thousand Ghana cedis each by the Local Organizing Committee for preparations.

At the end of the tournament, the first, second and third clubs to emerge as winners will receive handsome prices aside the ultimate trophy.
