Issa Hayatou mourns referee Andoh

CAF President Issa Hayatou has mourned the death of Ghanaian referee Kwame Andoh-Kyei, describing the incident that led to the death of the match official as deeply saddening and regrettable.

In a message to Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi, Hayatou said: “I would like to express my deepest sympathy on hearing of the untimely death of referee Kwame Andoh-Kyei.

Personally, and on behalf of the CAF executive committee and the entire African football community, I should be grateful if you could extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

“I wish to underscore that any acts of violence and attacks have no place in football and must be condemned and dealt with in the strongest possible terms and that you will take all necessary steps to address issues surrounding this sad situation,” Hayatou said.

Kwame Andoh-Kyei, a 21-year-old Ghanaian class three referee, died last Friday few days after being assaulted after a lower league match in Ghana’s Western Region he was refereeing as assistant.
