Volta Region to begin mass disinfection at markets on April 4

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) has announced that it will commence its mass disinfection exercise of markets in the region on Saturday, April 4, as part of measures to improve sanitation to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The move forms part of the government’s emergency response to contain the pandemic in Ghana.

In all about 75 markets as well as lorry parks adjacent the various markets in the 18 municipal and district assemblies in the region are expected to be simultaneously disinfected. At a media briefing in Ho, the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa directed all the municipal and district chief executives to engage market queens and traders as well other stakeholders to cooperate during the exercise.

He, however, urged especially traders and shop owners to comply with the directive to close their shops to allow for an effective exercise, saying that the market will be reopened for business on Sunday, April 5.

Meanwhile, the Volta Region has recorded no confirmed case of the coronavirus after all 17 suspected cases tested negative at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

The Deputy Volta Regional Director of Health, in charge of Public Health, Dr Senanu Dzokoto who disclosed this noted that the Regional Public Health Emergency Committee has increased its surveillance and coordination to detect early and contain the coronavirus in the region.
