Motorists in Ghana must obey road safety regulations in order to reduce road accidents in the country, Member of Parliament for Tema East and Deputy Transport Minister, Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover has said.

According to him, in countries where road accidents have been reduced drastically, the laws are respected by the citizens.

The few recalcitrant drivers who flout the rules are also punished by the law enforcers, he noted.

He has, therefore, asked Ghanaians to emulate the steps by these countries in order to deal with the menace confronting the country.

His comments follow the recent gory accidents that have occurred in various parts of the country.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service (MTTD) has revealed that a total of 592 people died in 3193 road accidents across the country within three months of this year as against the 530 recorded last year.

Additionally, 3,343 people suffered injuries, while 792 pedestrian knock-downs were recorded during the crashes.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM hosted by Chief Jerry Forson, on Tuesday, 17 April 2018, Mr Titus-Glover said: “We need to obey road safety regulations to reduce accidents in the country.”

“In countries where accidents have been reduced, the laws are respected, when people flout them they are punished.

“But in Ghana what do we see? Motor riders disregard traffic regulations with impunity, causing problems for people on the roads.”
