Deputy Captain of Asante Kotoko, Eric Donkor has opened up on what actually transpired before the club’s fatal accident on Wednesday night.

Players and staff of the Porcupine Warriors were en route to Kumasi after honouring their week 22 clash with Inter Allies at the El-Wak Stadium.

However, their bus ran into a Kia truck parked on the side of the road, resulting in the death of one person, with many more left injured.

It was later confirmed that the assistant equipment officer of Kotoko, Kofi Asare, lost his life in the gory accident, with player Ashitey Ollenu also left in critical condition.

There have been different accounts of what actually transpired prior to the accident, however, Kotoko’s deputy captain has now also opened up on the issue.

“It wasn’t easy but God made us survive, we the players. Unfortunately, we lost a technical team member,” Eric Donkor said in an interview with TV3.

“I was sitting at the back of the bus when the accident happened. I wasn’t asleep. I was awake when it happened," he added.

He revealed, “We were overtaking one big vehicle not knowing there was a KIA car parked with fertiliser and we just run into it. There wasn’t any triangle or any symbol to show that there is a spoilt car there. So we just run into it and that caused the accident.”

Several messages of support have poured in from the football world, with the club’s super clash against bitter rivals Hearts of Oak – initially scheduled for Sunday – indefinitely postponed by the Premier League Board (PLB).
