Govt reviewing ban on use of phones, other gadgets by SHS students – Dep. Education Minister

Deputy Education Minister, Yaw Adu Twum says the Ghana Education Service is working on policies to guide the use of digital tools in schools in Ghana.

Currently, students in the Junior and Senior High Schools across the country are not allowed to bring their gadgets including mobile phones to schools.

However, in a century where technology has taken a center stage in the flow of information and in academia, there has been a school of though that believes that it’s imperative to allow students to come to school with their mobile phones.

The Coronavirus has also given flesh to arguments on the need to allow students in the various Senior High Schools to come to school with their phones because it aids in the learning process.

Speaking on this issue on Accra-based Joy FM, the Deputy Minister noted that the benefits derived from the use of phones and other technological devices are enormous and the world over, people are adapting and moving forward with it.

On whether students will be allowed to bring their phones to school after the COVID-19 fight, he said GES is reviewing its protocols which includes bringing your device.

“GES is reviewing their protocols andpolicies regarding bring your own device which includes smart phones, laptops and other things so they are working on it. I think we have to face the reality that the world has shifted and certain tools have been part of learning. GES is fully aware of that and they are reviewing their policies so we just have to wait to see the policies that will come , they may even encourage you to do certain things so we just have to wait and see what will come, post COVID-19.
