Ghana Premier League break was very necessary – PLB Member

Mr. Thomas Boakye Aygemang, a Board Member of the Premier League Board (PLB), has defended the decision by the PLB, to hold on with the rest of the first round Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches for two weeks. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Tuesday, May 8, that, they have in consultation with the PLB postponed match days 13, 14 and 15 to be played in the last week of May and end in the first week of June.

This according to the GFA and PLB would make way to clear all outstanding games, and as well to facilitate the release of players to the national U-20 team ahead of their u20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double header with Algeria.

He noted that, the reasons given for the break were valid, adding that, all the clubs accepted the decision before it was made public. “I believe the break was very necessary. If you are educated on the circumstances through which the league was postponed, it would make you understand the fact that sometimes you plan, you make your schedules and fixtures, but it gets to a point you have no choice than to change it,” he said.

“Aduana travelled to other countries, there were times they were supposed to spend three days but they spent almost one week because of flight issues. And they were representing the nation, so who do you blame?

“They have several outstanding matches and they have played half the matches that the other clubs have played,” he continued. “And you know most of the clubs have some of their key players called up in the national u20 team. And it is very important we qualify for the tournament (u20 AFCON).

“So in other to allow Aduana to clear their outstanding matches and also to help a national cause, I believe it was very necessary we went on break. All the stakeholders’ holders sat at the meeting and we agreed that we go on that two weeks break,” he stated.
