Doctors with sports background should be attached to football clubs

Kumasi, Aug 23, GNA-A suggestion has been made to the sports governing body to ensure that only medical doctors with sports background are attached to football clubs.

Dr Tony Annan, a prominent Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician based in the United Kingdom (UK), said engaging doctors with sports background instead of the current practice of using general medical practitioners would enhance the performance of sportsmen and women in tournaments.

Dr Annan made the suggestion when he spoke on "Sports and Exercise Medicine in Ghana: The Way Forward", in the first of a series of public lectures held by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi at the weekend.

"Unlike the general medical practitioners, doctors with sporting background have a greater affection for sportsmen and ensure their fitness for all tournaments", he stressed.

Dr Annan attributed the poor performance of football clubs and athletes to the lack of team work and not the lack of skilled or talented sportsmen.

Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, lauded the lecture saying, it was timely since the KNUST has now introduced sports as an elective subject in the university's curriculum.
