The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called out critics for accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of politicizing the Coronavirus outbreak.

According to him, statements that the fight against the deadly virus should not be politicized are only hypocritical and actually meant former President John Dramani Mahama’s legacy "must not be celebrated."

“Whoever thought it was good strategy to discredit President John Mahama’s glorious legacy in the establishment of first-class hospitals which have been a saving grace at this crucial moment in our history has done his paymaster’s great disservice.”

Now we know that the shouts of: “don’t politicize the fight against COVID-19” actually means do not acknowledge and celebrate President Mahama’s legacy but you are free to applaud and hail from rooftops President Akufo-Addo’s interventions. Hypocrisy has never been this ugly!”

After President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s address to the nation on the current state of the pandemic as well as measures being put in place to ensure the safety as well as ease some burdens on the citizenry, John Mahama became the victim of heavy trolls on social media.

Among others, the president mentioned that the government will absorb the water bills for all Ghanaians for April, May and June; roll out a soft loan scheme up to a total of six hundred million cedis (GH¢600 million), which will have a one-year moratorium and two-year repayment period for micro, small and medium-scale businesses.

Suggestions on social media pointed out that the president has scored political points, slimming former president John Mahama’s chance of bringing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) back to power.

A video of Mr. Mahama weeping during the launch of NDC’s Electronic Payment Platform in January emerged, forming part of the materials used in trolling the flagbearer. While suggesting Mahama was crying over his loss, others used memes to taunt him.

Mr. Ablakwa, unperturbed, stated that “the strategy to discredit John Mahama’s legacy has woefully failed” thus more focus should be on curbing the virus.
