Government no longer has plans to fund the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme with assets from the Heritage Fund, this is according to Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The MP revealed this in a Facebook post, rejoicing over the Finance Minister’s retreat from the plan to use the Heritage Fund.

According to the legislator, “Last night, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was compelled to beat a fast retreat from his earlier intentions to deplete the Ghana Heritage Fund which he communicated to Parliament when he addressed the House on Monday and as can be verified from pages 15 and 16 of his address.”

The Finance Minister on Monday, 30th March 2020, proposed the use of the Ghana Heritage Fund to support CAP but was met with heavy criticisms from members of the minority as well as some economists.

In the latest development, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the “resistance to protect the Ghana Heritage Fund” has yielded positive results.

“In his remarks last night after securing $200million dollars for the coronavirus fight from the Stabilisation Fund which was established in 2011, the Finance Minister is now calling for a national debate to determine the way forward,” the MP wrote on Facebook

He added that “a significant victory for the hands-off Ghana Heritage Fund movement. Congratulations to all those who made their voices heard.”
