Clubs may lose points for preventing sponsors from excising their rights - Nyantakyi

Beginning March 2 when the new Ghana Premier League starts, clubs may suffer point deductions if they prevent Sponsors from exercising their rights on match days, that’s according to the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Addressing Club Administrators and representatives at the 24th GFA Congress, Nyantakyi was angry with clubs who prevented sponsors from covering games as such actions had resulted in a hurdle making it difficult for GFA to invite corporate bodies to invest into the league.

“We will not leave any stone unturned to seek sponsorship for our products. However, we have to be truthful that some of our actions as football clubs have contributed to the difficulties we are facing now. Some clubs go out of their way to prevent sponsors from excising their right like preventing television coverage of matches.”

He added that “such actions lead to sponsors pulling out of competitions whiles dissuading other companies from coming on board. Some of our utterances as well as the inability of clubs to leave up to their media responsibilities in ensuring that sponsors derive their right from sponsoring the league.”

Nyantakyi said the primitive measure to deduct points from clubs is part of measures to protect existing sponsors and encourage more sponsors to come on board to lift the financial burdens in running clubs.
