Canadian and UK Gay Community funds Akuffo-Addo campaign

Reports reaching *The True Statesman* have revealed that, the flag-bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akuffo-Addo is receiving huge funding from the gay communities in Canada and the United Kingdom in support of his campaign towards the 2012 presidential elections.

Nana Akufo-Addo is said to have received £720,000 from Black Gay Men's Advisory Group, an advocacy group for gays and lesbians in the United Kingdom (UK), and $500,000 from a top Lesbian, Gays*, Bisexual and Transgender* (LGBT), organization in Canada, in return of legalizing gays and lesbians right when he becomes president.

This revelation has confirmed his silence on the issue of homosexuality, especially when discussions on this social canker reached its apogee in the past few months. Most Africans including Ghanaians say homosexuality violates their religious and cultural beliefs.

It may be recalled that, the UK Prime Minister David Cameron recently said that, aid would be cut off from countries which failed to respect gay rights. This was heavily criticized by many people including President Mills of Ghana who stated categorically that, "I, as president, will never initiate or support any attempt to legalize homosexuality in Ghana”.

According to President Mills, the UK could not impose its values on Ghana and he would never legalize homosexuality adding that, Mr. Cameron was entitled to his views, but he did not have the right to "direct to other sovereign nations as to what they should do".

Many people were expecting the flag-bearer of the opposition NPP, Nana Akuffo Addo to criticize the UK Prime Minister’s statements on gays but which he failed to do.

It is therefore not surprising to hear that, some gay communities in the United Kingdom and Canada have given him huge sums of money in his bid to ascend to the high office of the land. This means, Nana Addo when given the chance as president of Ghana, will not hesitate to legalize homosexuality in Ghana.
