Fire consumes boy, 13, in Kumasi

A 13-year-old boy identified only as Koo Emma, was burnt to death at a slum within Asafo in Kumasi, Friday dawn when fire razed down the wooden structure in which he was sleeping.

It is not immediately known what caused the fire but the charred body has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue for autopsy.

Destruction

According to an eyewitness, when a team of firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire had spread to other structures, causing damage to property valued at hundreds of Ghana cedis.

The fire also destroyed properties including paints, lubricants and other materials sold in container shops that were affected.

Shop owners are salvaging what is left of their belongings from the debris and are counting their loses.

Investigation

An official of the National Management Organization says they have begun thorough assessment on the incident.

This is not the first time such an incident has been reported in the Asafo enclave.

In July 2016, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy was burnt to death in a wooden structure in which he was sleeping.

About 40 structures were affected in the evening blaze.

It was not immediately known what caused the fire.
