The poor man was needed to win the elections for NDC. But he knew he was sick and he had nothing to gain from the victory apart from paving the way for his compatriots(it's a shame to use a word with patriots in it to describe the NDC). They clearly waited in the wings while he died knowing he was not going to rule anyway. They may not have gambled that his death will deliver the victory they wanted, but even if he died were there any of them who knew that they would gain from it. So the idea would have been to sell him a notion of his importance to the party. In his simplicity he may have seen his contribution to the charade as necessary for the party's mission. Little did he know that to them he was just the instrument that they needed for the real intentions of looting the State. Poor man, they would have bumped him off anyway as soon as they had victory in the bag.
