Why should there be violence because of a new register – NPP secretary wonders

Sulley Sambian Sulley Sambian

North East Regional Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Sulley Sambian says John Dramani Mahama is beating war drums with his claim that there could be violence if the Electoral Commission of Ghana(EC) goes ahead to compile a new voters register.

Lawyer Sambian opines that since the independent Electoral Commission(EC) sees the need to compile a new voters’ register, they should be allowed to go ahead without the needless cynicism surrounding the move.

For him the claim by former President John Dramani Mahama is unstatesmanlike, advising that John Mahama must avoid such comments given that as a former President, he is a statesman.

“Why should there be violence because of a new register? JM is a statesman and must see himself as such. The cynicism surrounding this new voter register is needless.

Sadly, JM is busy beating war drums.

The NPP clamored for a new register prior to the 2016 elections. The managers of our electoral system did not see the need for one. The same managers now see the need for a new register and JM thinks hell must break loose?” he quizzed.

He then accused the NDC of unlike, the NPP, vilifying the EC under the guise of a coalition against the compilation of the new voters register, conceding that the NDC can disagree with the EC but it must allow it to do its work.

“I have lived in this country long enough to remember that the NPP did not vilify the electoral commission like the NDC, hiding pretentiously under a funny coalition is doing today.

It’s ok to disagree with the electoral commission, but beyond that, let’s allow them discharge their constitutional mandate,” he urged.
