Unposted Teacher Trainees besiege GES with mattresses, bags to sleep over until paid

Some members of the 2016/2017 year group of the Unposted Teacher Trainees have vowed to sleep at the premises of the Ghana Education Service (GES) this evening and beyond till their grievances are attended to.

With mattresses and bags, and prepared to sleep overnight, the peeved teacher trainees say they will not go back on their decisions.

Though some of their colleagues were arrested for inciting violence at the premises this Monday morning, they remain unperturbed, even about the 'threats' from the police.

This stance is resultant of delays by the GES as far as the postings of 2016/2017 trainees are concerned; delays they say they have not been given any tangible reasons for as at the time Ghanaweb’s team visited the grounds.

Giving reasons some of them failed to complete their courses in the required year, Organiser of the Coalition, Juliana Yeboaa stated that “even though it is expected of a candidate to complete college respectively…some of us were not able to complete college in the year expected of us because of financial issues, health-related issues, referral or deferral that an individual should have to address and complete in that particular year and therefore proceeding to the next and subsequently completing college”.

Trainees from parts of the country, specifically the Ashanti and Northern regions were part of the demonstrators who picketed at GES today, January 13, 2019.

According to them, their coming to Accra was as a result of text messages they had received from GES regarding postings, messages which apparently were forged and not from the GES as assumed.

Meanwhile, Ministries District Police Commander, Superintendent Florence Owusu confirmed to GhanaWeb that, the messages circulating as indicated by the trainees were fake and not from GES as speculated.
