Prestea Huni-Valley MP supplies sanitary pads to females to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day

The Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley Constituency in the Western Region, Lawyer Barbara Oteng-Gyasi who also doubles as the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Art has donated 650 pieces of 'Yazz' Sanitary Pads to females in her area to observe the World Menstrual Hygiene Day on Tuesday.

Considering the fact that females constitute a high percentage of the population and they experience monthly menstruation, menstrual hygiene is significant for the holistic development of the female from healthy lives to equitable education, to ensure gender equality and empowerment.

Hon. Member of Parliament's donation is to ensure access to quality sustainable feminine hygiene training for girls in Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality who otherwise go without menstrual health management and reproductive health education.

Issues associated with menstruation are seldom discussed openly and this burdens young girls by keeping them ignorant.

The unhygienic practices of using materials like rags, toilet rolls, old pieces of cloth during menstruation instead of sanitary towels, lead to many health-related issues.

She made the donation to the Municipal Director of Education to undertake menstrual hygiene training for school girls in the Municipality.

Presenting the items on behalf of the MP was the Constituency Deputy Secretary Mr. Samuel Blay and Hajia Azumi who is also the Constituency Women's Organizer when the Municipal Director of Education called on the MP to support towards the celebration of National Menstruation Day which falls on every 28th day of May.

Receiving the items the Municipal Director of Education thanked the Hon. MP for her support towards education in the Municipality and assured her they will do all their possible best to support the member of Parliament to improve education standards.

The Municipal Directorate applauded her for the recent donation of computers and motor bikes for easy movement, establishment of ultra mordern school buildings with Auxiliary facilities and free vacation classes being organised by her.

He said menstrual hygiene management is a very important aspect in the life of girls.

"Maintaining proper hygiene is quite challenging for menstruating young girls especially school children due to certain factors which range from financial to social background" he emphasized.

The Municipal Diector of education implored Lawyer Barbara Oteng-Gyasi to continue to support the education sector as it is the bed rock for development of every nation and ask for God's blessings for her.
