Nkawkaw SHS student drowns in galamsey pit, two arrested

An eighteen-year-old form one student of the Nkawkaw Senior High School has been found in an abandoned 'galamsey' pit at Sakapiah, a farming community near Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.

Body of the deceased, Richard Achiaw, has been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital Morgue.

Information gathered indicate that on May 30, 2019, the deceased and his friend Amponsah Maxwell from Akoase Community went to an abandoned 'galamsey' site turned into a pool at Sakapiah to swim, however, he allegedly fell into the pit and got drowned.

Upon receipt of information from Amponsah who reported at the Akoase Police station, the police visited the scene and with the help of divers, the body was removed the next day.

However, Police investigators detected blood coming from the nose and mouth with bruises on the body raising suspicions of foul play.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh has confirmed to Starr News that the complainant, friend of the deceased has been detained by Police as well as the owner of the abandoned 'galamsey' pit, Kelvin Essien, 39, all assisting police in investigating the incident.
