NPP roots for Akufo-Addo to go unopposed in flagbearer contest

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rooting for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to go unopposed in the upcoming flagbearer contest in order to face National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) John Dramani Mahama in 2020.

The NPP canceled an initial plan to hold primaries for sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) in January 2020 for reasons yet to be made public following the outcome of a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday, October 21, 2019.

The General Secretary of the party Mr John Boadu on Monday after NEC meeting told the press the parliamentary and presidential primaries will now be held same day thus on April 25, 2020.

The party has not opened nominations and filling of forms to candidates who wish to pick their forms.

According to regulations of the party, anyone who wishes to contest in the upcoming elections does not have the right this time to go on a campaign until the National Executive Council declares such a date.

Speaking to the development on Tuesday, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP Mr Samuel Payne categorically stated that President Akufo-Addo will go unopposed in the flagbearer contest.

Though the party has not made any concrete decision on the issue, Sampae as popularly called gave an indication the party will reject any candidate who wants to come up against the sitting president at the primaries

In an interview with Kumas-based Angel Fm monitored by MyNewsGh.com whiles explaining the party’s stand and regulation on its elections stated that “Presidents Akufo Addo will go unopposed” in the upcoming elections.

“We have decided that, our presidential primaries will also be held on the 25th of April. The program for the day will be in two folds, which I know for sure that Nana Addo will go unopposed, hence the first part will be the acclamation of the president”. Mr Samuel Payne told Kwame Tanko on the show.
