Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has taken a dig at social media activists of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for going silent on the country’s ranking in the 2019 Corruption Perception Index report.

In a Facebook post sighted by www.ghanaweb.com, Mr Azure questioned why the activists have gone mute on the Transparency International rankings which has seen Ghana drop ranks from 78 to 80 out of 180 countries.

According to him, the NPP which had used corruption as their “biggest weapon” in campaigning against the John Mahama government back in 2016 should by now be touting some of its performances in fighting corruption.

“Corruption was your biggest weapon against the Mahama administration in the 2016 election. The CPI, together with Martin Amidu's and the Chief Clearing Agent's sterling performances in combatting the menace, should have been your main posts this morning as you often do even when the president goes to borrow and gives contracts to foreigners.”

He further posited in his post that the reality of corruption in the country under the current government of Akufo-Addo is far worst than the perception held in the findings of the rankings.

He called out the party’s activists to compare their governments’ scores in fighting corruption against the incumbent and share the result.

Even though Ghana maintained its score 41 out of 100 from 2018, the country has moved to 80th position in the 2019 rankings compared to 2018 when Ghana placed 78.

The Corruption Perceptions Index, an index published annually by Transparency International since 1995 ranks countries "by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys.
