Lay off staff right way – National Labour Commission to Goldfields

Vincent Ofosu Asamoah, Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission Vincent Ofosu Asamoah, Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission

Vincent Ofosu Asamoah, Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), has asked the management of the Goldfields Mine Limited, to follow due procedure in laying off workers.

Staff of Goldfields Tarkwa Mine in the Western Region on Monday, 12 March 2018 embarked on a demonstration over plans by management to cut about 2,150 workers.

The action of the workers has been backed by the National Executive Council of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The council, in an emergency meeting over the impasse last week, resolved that “there should be hoisting and wearing of red bands by all workers in the mining industry, beginning Tuesday, March 13, 2018.”

Answering a question on how this situation can be dealt with by the mining firm, while speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM hosted by Obeng Mensah on Wednesday, March 14, Mr Asamoah said: “If at a point you want to lay off workers there is a laid down procedure to follow. I am sure the firm has an agreement spelt out in the contract with the workers and so they must follow the agreement agreed upon.

“It is after the company has failed to stick to the terms of the agreement that we at the Labour Commission can come in and deal with the situation.”
