Half Assini soccer fans defy heavy downpour to celebrate Stars victory

Half Assini (W/R) Feb. 6, GNA - A large crowd of soccer fans at Half Assini in the Jomoro District of the Western Region on Sunday evening defied a severe rainstorm accompanied by heavy downpour and took to the streets to celebrate the victory of Black Stars over Tunisia.

The Black Stars beat their Tunisian counterpart 2-1 to qualify to the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations Football competition being hosted jointly by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon during an extra time.

A visit to the streets of Half Assini by the GNA Sports indicated that during the beginning of the extra time after both teams were at 1-1 draw, a rainstorm, accompanied by a heavy downpour started, compelling soccer fans viewing the match on TV at open spaces to rush indoors for cover.

The interaction revealed that the moment the Black Start scored the second goal, a large crowd of soccer fans defied the downpour, trooped into the streets and started to celebrate the victory amid singing and dancing.

One of the celebrants, Solomon Nwanwa, a driver, said he lost appetite after the 90 minutes but ate very well after the Stars victory.

Madam Rebecca Acorli said she became very sad after the 90 minutes but also recovered from that situation after the final whistle of the match.

The crowd celebrated through the streets amidst chanting of songs till midnight.

They later appealed to the Black Stars to continue their fight and lift the Cup for the nation.
