Government asked to enact law to compel family heads to report the dead to EC

A public official has suggested to the government to enact a law to compel family heads or the Birth and Death Registry to furnish information on the deceased periodically to Electoral Commission to update its records

Mr Kenneth Addai Boadu, the Jomoro District Director of Agriculture, said this at the Jomoro District dialogue on the biometric voters’ registration at Half Assini on Tuesday. he said, this would enable the EC to have a credible voters’ register.

It was organised by the Jomoro District Electoral Commission (EC) and attended by representatives of political parties and heads of department in the district.

Mr Boadu said the current process where such information is provided voluntarily by the public to EC to update its register had not been the best so far as people are reluctant to do so.

Mr Kwabena Asante, Jomoro district Electoral Officer, speaking on possible causes of bloated voter register, said, it was difficult for the EC to expunge names of deceased persons from the current register due to lack of cooperation from the public.**
