Ghana remembers Atta Mills

A ceremony is expected to be held today in Accra to mark the fifth anniversary of the demise of former President John Evans Atta Mills.

Prof Mills passed away in the afternoon of July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital where he had been rushed to for treatment.

He was laid to rest on August 10 of that year at the Geese Park, now known as Asomdwee Park, close to the Osu Castle in Accra. He was 68.

Meanwhile, some legislators are angry over the deplorable conditions at the burial grounds of the late president.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) constituency, Samuel Atta Mills, who is also the brother of the late president, the state of the final resting place of the late professor is clearly an insult to his memory and his role in the country’s history.

Making a statement in parliament on Friday July 21 about the current state of the park ahead of the commemoration of the event today, he questioned why managers of the park had left it to deteriorate.

“A visit to the place shows it is not receiving the required attention and maintenance,” Mr Mills told parliament, adding: “A well-crafted metallic cover of the tomb has developed green cracks detaching itself from the rest of the artefact.”

He said portions of the tomb are falling apart and have been supported with concrete blocks.

Mr Mills revealed there are weeds all over the location and the place is engulfed by filth.
