Fulani man grabbed on Berekum highway robbery

The police command in the Berekum District of the Bono Region has arrested a 25-year-old male Fulani suspect in connection to an armed robbery at Seikwa/Berekum.

A situational report from the police sighted by ClassFMonline.com indicated that the cops received information at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 3 July 2019, that five robbers armed with sticks and AK-47 rifles, and dressed in black jackets were stopping and robbing passengers on board vehicles plying the road to and from Berekum.

The police said while en route to the crime scene, they met a Ford Transit bus with registration number 417 T whose passengers had already been robbed.

The robbers fled into the bush before the police got to the scene.

The police team bypassed the scene to Seikwa and deliberately spent over 30 minutes there.

On their return, they met a second car, a Nissan Urvan bus with registration number AS 4893-17 with passengers from Berekum to Seikwa being robbed.

The report said the robbers, upon sighting the police, started firing an AK-47 assault rifle. The police returned fire and on realising the rate at which the police were shooting, the robbers decided to flee.

The one with the AK-47 held took one male victim hostage and used him as a body shield as he ran into the bush while shooting at the police. The suspect only freed the victim once he had made his getaway.

The arrested Fulani suspect was met in the bush beating a male victim with a hefty stick.

After a search on the suspect, the police found GHS 214, three (3) mobile phones, a set of women’s makeup kit and three (3) tins of milk hidden in his black jacket which had been robbed from the first car.

The brutalised victim sustained injuries and was issued with a medical form to go to the hospital for treatment.
