Coronavirus: Our lives are under threat, Parliament should be adjourned indefinitely - A.B.A Fuseini

The Minority in Parliament is calling for an indefinite adjournment of sitting following reports that some Members of Parliament who tested positive for COVID-19 are still reporting to work.

According to Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu constituency in the Northern Region, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, the failure to adjourn sitting is putting the lives of MPs under threat.

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensa Bonsu, raised concerns over failure of some MPs and staff to stay home after testing positive for Coronavirus after the mandatory testing. The call came after he had initially refuted claims that some members tested positive.

Also, Dormaa Central MP who doubles as the Minister of Health was announced to have tested positive for the virus and was receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Center.

This development according to the Minority is a threat to MPs as the house has failed to close down parliament pending measures that would be put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini said “…we have always pushed for the right things to be done. We think that sitting in the chambers should be adjourned indefinitely pending measures that would be taken to ensure the security and safety of members. As we speak now members are not safe because you heard the Majority Leader’s statement that some people who have tested positive are still reporting to work. So that is the greatest threat yet in the lives of members of parliament and I think it is not something we should take for granted.”

He added that the Minority would meet to come out with a plan to address the issue with regards to adjourning parliament before it would be raised on the floor of parliament.




Meanwhile, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has revealed that the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman- Manu, has been discharged from the UGMC and is responding to treatment at home.

Ghana has recorded 229 new cases of Coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases to 12,193, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced.

According to Dr. Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, Director-General of GHS, the cases were recorded in nine regions. The Ashanti Region, he said, confirmed the most number of new cases.

At a press briefing, Tuesday, June 16, Dr. Aboagye said 70 cases were from the Ashanti Region while 42 were confirmed in the Central Region. Savanna Region on the other hand recorded 34 cases.

The country has also recorded 68 new recoveries, bringing the recoveries tally to 4,326. The death toll has also seen a rise. It now stands at 58 after 4 more persons with the virus died.

This brings the total number of active cases to 7,813.
