Communities in Kassena-Nankana West District appeal for new district

Bolgatanga, May 29, GNA - Communities living along the eastern corridor of the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region have appealed to President John Atta Mills to give them a new constituency and district to enable them develop. The Chief of Mirigu, Naba Roger Atasige, made the appeal in a petition to the President during his visit to the area. He said they were demanding a new district because the area had a problem of constituencies criss-crossing one another. The areas that fall under the Eastern Corridors of the Kasseana-Nankana West District are Mirigu, Nabango, Yua, Kandiga, Serigu, Natognia and Mayoro.

President Mills assured them that their petition would be looked into and asked them to exercise restraint whilst the Government studied the area's eligibility. He told the people that a population and housing census would be conducted next year and that could facilitate the process as the figures would be needed as one of the requirement for creating a district. Mr Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, thanked the people for channelling their grievances in a matured manner to the President and reiterated the need for them to be patient whilst the due process was followed. 29 May 09
