Barclays Bank to assist Garu-Tempane District repair damaged bridge

Bolgatanga, Nov. 24, GNA - Barclays Bank has pledged to assist the newly created Garu-Tempane District Assembly in the Upper East Region with an mount of 75,000 dollars to repair at a least a damaged bridge caused by the recent flood in the area.

It has therefore charged the Assembly to identify a worse damaged bridge in the area for the commencement of the repairs. The Communication Officer in-charge of Red Cross Ghana and the Regional Secretary of the Red Cross Ghana, Ms Mina Agyeman and Abarike Joseph Azumah jointly disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga after distributing some relief items to the flood victims in the Region.

The explained that through Red Cross Ghana a lot of partners were responding positively and contributing to assist the flood victims in the three northern regions.

The relief items which included bags of rice and maize, gallons of cooking oil, soap, blankets, mats, buckets, tarpaulins, sleeping mats, gari, beans, jerry cans, among others, worth 1.7 billion cedis.

Mr Agyeman said the Districts, which benefited from the relief items were Bongo, Bawku East, Garu-Tempane and Builsa Districts. She explained that some communities in the Northern Region, including six communities in the West Mamprusi, six in Savalugu-Nanton and eleven in the Saboba-Cheriponi Districts had also benefited from the exercise, which was still on-going.

She stated that the second phase of the distribution exercise in the two Regions would include farming implements and building materials. The Regional Secretary of Red Cross mentioned Barclays Bank, China Red Cross, Iranian Red Cross, International France Cooperation, Italian Government, Stratcom Africa Havilak who had contributed immensely to the aid of the flood victims and commended them for their contribution. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Alhassan Samari, thanked Red Cross for always responding positively to emergency situation, especially the recent flood that hit the Region.

He indicated that, so far in terms of distribution of relief items to the three Northern Regions, Upper East had done it perfectly but cautioned the beneficiaries not to sell the items in the markets since when caught would be sanctioned.
