Agona West Assembly to prosecute sanitation offenders

The Agona West Municipal Assembly will soon start prosecuting sanitation offenders as part of efforts to ensure environmental cleanliness.

Mr Ishmael Nana Ogyefo, the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Assembly, said this at the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise in the municipality.

He said, at the moment, the Assembly’s sanitation bye-laws had been gazetted and therefore it would not hesitate to bring offenders before the law courts for prosecution.

Mr Ogyefo said the municipality was adjudged the neatest in the Central Region in 2018, and that the staff of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department of the Assembly were working hard to contest the National Best Sanitation position this year.

“As declared by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that every day is a sanitation day, we in the Agona West Assembly would continue to work hard to maintain environmental cleanliness at all times,” he added.

The Coordinating Director said for the four years that the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercises had been held in the area, no cholera case or any strange communicable disease had been recorded in the municipality.

Mr Ogyefo appealed to the assembly members, chiefs and opinion leaders to educate residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly in the streets and gutters to maintain a clean environment.

Mr George Freeman, the Head of the Environmental and Sanitation Department of the Assembly, commended the chiefs, assembly members, keep fit clubs, civil society organisations for their continuous support to the Assembly, which helped it to emerge as the neatest municipality in the Central Region.
